Shingles is a condition that is troubling to have on any part of the body, but there is a particular concern about it in ophthalmology because of the disastrous effects it can have on the eye and vision. Currently about 1 in 3 Americans get shingles in their lifetime, so it is actually a rather common condition with the incidence going up with increasing age.
