Requirements for Potential Candidates
Each individual has unique eyes, making not everyone a candidate for LASIK surgery. Just as no two fingerprints or DNA samples are alike, cornea maps vary from person to person. This is why a pre-operative exam is essential before LASIK.
Before undergoing a LASIK or PRK procedure, you’ll need to complete a series of diagnostic tests to assess the stability of your vision. After thoroughly evaluating your cornea, our doctors will determine your candidacy for the procedure. This comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is the first step toward achieving your optimal vision.
The doctors and technicians at Eye Associates of New Mexico will provide a pre-operative eye exam. The following measurements and tests will be performed to determine candidacy:
- Measurement of corneal thickness, including corneal topography
- Complete review of overall eye health
- The measurement of your prescription or refractive errors
- Custom measurement for higher-order aberrations.
- Dry eye test
- Complete dilation to view the back of the eye or the retina
- Glasses or contact lens history review
- Measurement of pupil size
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have healthy eyes with no significant eye conditions or diseases.
- Be free from certain medical conditions that may affect LASIK candidacy.
- Have realistic expectations about LASIK outcomes.
- Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK, but you may be a candidate for other refractive procedures that we offer.
